  • Place Name: First Place
    Contestant Name: Detroit Lakes Tribune
Entry Title: Training for the worst: Detroit Lakes firefighters burn derelict home
    Entry Credit: Michael Achterling
Judge Comment: I know its a set fire and the photographer probably knew about it in advance but it is still wonderfully framed and shows what real-life firefighters have to do. This photo tells a story and does it beautifully
  • Place Name: Second Place
    Contestant Name: Albert Lea Tribune
Entry Title: 'Police: Man allegedly lights woman on fire'
    Entry Credit: Sarah Stultz
Judge Comment: Nice fire photo but it could use cropping- I got a real fire but nothing of a woman burned out of it. It tells a story but not quite all of it.
  • Place Name: Third Place
    Contestant Name: Austin Daily Herald
    Entry Title: Protesters seek justice
    Entry Credit: Eric Johnson
Judge Comment: So much emotion - your photo tells its story. I'm not fond of protest photos in the news category because they tend to be pre planned but the emotion in this one a rare glimpse into real life.
  • Competition Comment: You have so may talented people. It was hard to decide on the winners. All photos told me a story and all were clear. Some were just more feature photos that news.
