Place Name: First Place Contestant Name: New York Mills Dispatch Entry Title: General Excellence Entry Credit: staff Judge Comment: A very fine small newspaper. Good coverage of local and regional events, interesting editorial page, excellent coverage of youth/sports.
Place Name: Second Place Contestant Name: Henning - Citizen's Advocate Entry Title: General Excellence Entry Credit: Staff Judge Comment: This is also an excellent paper, with good local and youth/high school coverage, in a readable layout.
Place Name: Third Place Contestant Name: Henderson Independent Entry Title: Henderson Independent - General Excellence Entry Credit: Rachel Miller, Beth Cornish, Josh Wilson Judge Comment: The Independent shares the good traits of our first and second place winners, although not quite in equal measure. But it is a good paper and its staff should be proud.
Competition Comment: This was a strong group of small papers. We were impressed by the extensive and often insightful coverage of local events, good editorial pages, superior design/layout and use of photographs--and general excellence, to coin a phrase. These papers were at least the equal of, if not superior to, many papers in larger circulation categories.
Minnesota is lucky to have them.
