  • Place Name: First Place
Contestant Name: Tommie Media (University of St. Thomas)
Entry Title: Chauvin verdict inspires cheers, tears in downtown Minneapolis
Entry Credit: Mia Laube, Emily Haugen, Angeline Terry, Justin Amaker, Leila Weah
Judge Comment: Well done. Verdict stories are hard to do and still be original. Everyone knew the verdict, so leading with the emotion was a good call. The way the story unfolds, you can sense the tension, and relief and joyous chaos of the moment. The closing 2 grafs were strong, and sum up this story in a unique way.
  • Place Name: Second Place
Contestant Name: The Mac Weekly (Macalester)
Entry Title: Sudden kettle in Brooklyn Center results in 136 arrests; two Macalester students
Entry Credit: Estelle Timar-Wilcox, Malcolm Cooke, Lily Denehy, Shosuke Noma
Judge Comment: Deep breaking story, unpacking a lot of information. I appreciated the punchy lede, and active writing throughout. Good focus on student voices in this story, as well as weaving in facts and the “why” of the protest and the response.
  • Place Name: Third Place
Contestant Name: The Mac Weekly (Macalester)
Entry Title: Students block Grand Ave. in protest of Mac’s Enbridge investments
Entry Credit: Lily Denehy, Estelle Timar-Wilcox
Judge Comment: Good reporting on a complex topic. Probably a little dense for protest coverage; the strongest element is explaining the life-cycle of student social movements, which rise and fall in an ever-four-years cycle.
  • Competition Comment: Good entries in a particularly newsworthy year in Minnesota.
