Investigative Reporting ( 2 Year College/University,4 Year College/University)Back
Place Name: First Place Contestant Name: The Mac Weekly (Macalester) Entry Title: Direct action and divestment: Mac’s investment in Enbridge sparks frustration Entry Credit: Estelle Timar-Wilcox, Lily Denehy Judge Comment: Informative. What investigative reporting is all about. Topical and timely. Exposed information that is not readily available. Story went deep into all sides of issues with multiple sources and facts.
Place Name: Second Place Contestant Name: The Bark (University of Minnesota - Duluth) Entry Title: DPA REQUEST REVEALS TIMELINE OF REMOVAL DECISION, FRUSTRATION Entry Credit: Michael King, Hunter Dunteman, Madison Hunter Judge Comment: Straight forward. Good use of data practice to tell the story that could have been boring. Loved the reaction from some who were interviewed.
Place Name: Third Place Contestant Name: MSU/Mankato - The Reporter Entry Title: Deep dive: Minnesota police education standards vary Entry Credit: Julia Barton Judge Comment: Timely and informative. Good reporting with multiple sources.
Competition Comment: A difficult category to judge. I had to read the stories a second time, which speaks highly to the quality of writing for each of the stories. All entries had multiple sources with lots of facts. They all had timely topics that covered issues in such a way that you did not have to be from the campus to find the issues relevant. A mark of very good reporting.
