Place Name: First Place Contestant Name: Mankato - The Free Press Entry Title: Free Press editions 1/17/21, 3/12/21, 8/11/21 Entry Credit: Free Press Staff Judge Comment: Lots of entry points on page 1, although the heavy typeface on the top teasers is a tad overpowering.
Good variance in lead and secondary photos.
Attractive column logos and section flags. The scoreboards on the sports pages are easy to navigate.
Headline leading a little loose in some places. And I don't envy the headline writer who has to craft a headline, a subhead and a sub-subhead on centerpiece packages.
Place Name: Second Place Contestant Name: Rochester- Post Bulletin Entry Title: Rochester Post Bulletin Entry Credit: Staff Judge Comment: Same basic geometry on many of the Page 1 entries and feature/sports section fronts.
Logos and drop-caps are eye-catching. Good use of white space so pages don't feel cramped.
Clever concept and execution of "Love in the time of COVID" package on March 13 Life section front.
The 507 feature on the Life pages is eye-popping.
Place Name: Third Place Contestant Name: Winona Post Entry Title: Winona Post - Typography and Design Entry Credit: Ashley Blum, Monica Veraguth Judge Comment: Good mix of dominant and secondary photos. Varied headline sizes and typefaces create hierarchy.
Background imagery in nameplate is clever.
The Page 1 design of the three submissions is basically a template. Don't be afraid to let your designers flex.
I almost didn't open the 1B and 1C sections because they looked like ad inserts. Bigger section flags would help.
