Place Name: First Place Contestant Name: Cloquet - Pine Knot News Entry Title: Pine Knot News Entry Credit: Mike Creger Judge Comment: Tab format is easy to navigate. Index and refer treatment a plus. Well-designed labels and mug logos. Good mix of dominant and secondary photos. It's good to take a risk with design elements such as pull quotes that were part of Nov. 20 COVID diary, but be careful you don't impair readability, as the light grayscale does on Page 13.
Place Name: Second Place Contestant Name: Jackson County Pilot Entry Title: Jackson County Pilot - Typography and Design Entry Credit: Jackson County Pilot Judge Comment: Submissions are ambitious and largely successful. The by-the-numbers graphic and timeline on March 11 front page were a good concepts but could have used some tweaks in terms of typography choice. Slick roads centerpiece on Jan. 21 was a good design but could have used more variance in the content of photos. Sports section well-designed and well-organized. Nice use of lead and secondary photos.
Place Name: Third Place Contestant Name: Henning - Citizen's Advocate Entry Title: Typography and Design Entry Credit: Staff Judge Comment: Good variance of photo sizes to create hierarchy. Cutouts in nameplate are ambitious, but be careful not to obscure readability of refer text. I'd increase the leading in multi-deck headlines and add white space between main heads and subheads. Citizen's Advocate is in the same "family" as some other entries but had the cleanest overall design among them.
