Place Name: First Place Contestant Name: East Grand Forks - The Exponent Entry Title: Turtle Dundee Entry Credit: Bruce B Brierley Judge Comment: Close call between this and second place. Would have liked to have seen photog a little closer to subject. He has so many lines in his face that bring charachter to the photo.
Place Name: Second Place Contestant Name: Monticello Times Entry Title: Mural is a gift to those who served Entry Credit: Jeffrey Hage Judge Comment: Nice portrait, but could have used a lot more contrast to make it pop. In the newspaper cropping, the subject was too close to the right edge of photo. Opened the original and found him to be centered. Somewhere in-between would have been more pleasing to the eye. Remember the rule of thirds. It'd been around forever, but still works.
Place Name: Third Place Contestant Name: Hinckley News Entry Title: Local business stays focused Entry Credit: Jamie Lund Judge Comment: Not a bad portrait, may have benefitted from a little looser crop and a little less highlight on the subject. May even have subtly suggested that the subject put on a shirt to cover her shoulders.
Competition Comment: Category had very few true portrait/personality entries. Winners seemed to care about doing a good portrait.
