2020 MNA College Better Newspaper Contest

Website ( 2 Year College/University,4 Year College/University)Back

  • Place Name: First Place
Contestant Name: Tommie Media (University of St. Thomas)
    Entry Title: TommieMedia website
    Entry Credit: Emily Haugen
Judge Comment: TommieMedia by a nose! The use of purple - the school's color - to reinforce the brand is nicely executed. The main story pops out front and center, with sub stories cleanly organized. I also love seeing social connection glyphs in the header - simple to find and easy to click. Well done TommieMedia!
  • Place Name: Second Place
Contestant Name: The Clarion (Bethel University)
Entry Title: The Bethel Clarion website
Entry Credit: Josh Towner, Will Jacott, Zach Walker, Jasmine Johnson, Molly Korzenowski
Judge Comment: Compelling photos pull readers into stories, and The Clarion does an excellent job using photos and short headlines to entice clicks. I especially like the use of one main photo box and four sub story photo boxes, keeping things uncluttered above the fold. Kudos to The Clarion!
  • Place Name: Third Place
Contestant Name: The Bark (University of Minnesota - Duluth)
    Entry Title: The Bark UMD
    Entry Credit: The Bark Staff
Judge Comment: The Bark is a shining example of the "less is more" website strategy. I love the huge photo promoting the "Big Story" in the top slider, which also offers functionality to navigate to other news sections without scrolling. Terrific effort by The Bark!
  • Competition Comment: This was a highly competitive category, with each of the entries making a case for being one of the top college newspaper websites in the state. Awarding the top three places was difficult, but everyone deserves a round of applause for a job well done!
