  • Place Name: First Place
Contestant Name: Cloquet - Pine Knot News
    Entry Title: Pine Knot News
    Entry Credit: Pine Knot News
Judge Comment: Nice candid photos from events, with good variety and often used in packages pushed this paper to the top. Good sports action photos, too.
  • Place Name: Second Place
Contestant Name: New York Mills Dispatch
Entry Title: Use of Photography as a whole
    Entry Credit: staff
Judge Comment: Some nice creative layouts, interesting crops and solid photo packages. Visual variety could use some work at times -- some instances of very similar photos running near each other.
  • Place Name: Third Place
Contestant Name: Henning - Citizen's Advocate
Entry Title: Use of Photography as a whole
    Entry Credit: Staff
Judge Comment: Generally a nice polished look, good use of candid photos and packages. One issue entered could have used a tighter edit of the photos on A1, resulting in a cluttered look that was inconsistent with the other issues entered.
  • Competition Comment: A tough one to judge - lots of good contenders. The winners moved to the top through good use of candid photos, photo packages, variety of images and their layouts. A number of entrants could have placed higher with tighter edits and more consistent image quality and design. I'm all for using more photos, but at times it can make the page look cluttered. It never hurts to have good photos inside, too.
