Contestant Name: Blaine, Spring Lake Park, Columbia Hgts, Fridley
Entry Title: Life Typography & Design
Entry Credit: Paige Kieffer, Jonathan Young, Patrick Slack
Judge Comment: Font choices work with the tab format (I like the color match of the megaphone on the "Eco-Warrior" headline). Teasers and color palette are well-done. The body font is a little dated but the size works and doesn't detract from the overall look. Stands tall above the other entries.
  • Place Name: Second Place
    Contestant Name: Winona Post
Entry Title: Winona Post typography and design
    Entry Credit: Monica Veraguth
Judge Comment: Lowercase nameplate works as it gives the front a contemporary feel. Some of the background photos work, some made it look too busy. Kind of a "font stew" with the teasers -- maybe simplify the choices? Jumplines bigger than usual but I think they work within the overall approach.
  • Place Name: Third Place
    Contestant Name: Preston-Fillmore County Journal
Entry Title: Some jaw-dropping stuff happening in these issues
Entry Credit: Jason Sethre, Amanda Sethre, Taylor Case, Ellen Whalen, Sara Schultz
Judge Comment: A tab that takes a broadsheet approach which, in this case, make it look more like a newsletter than a newspaper. But good color reproduction and tasteful spot color use make it an appealing design.
