2019 MNA College Better Newspaper Contest

Business Story ( 2 Year College/University,4 Year College/University)Back

  • Place Name: First Place
    Contestant Name: University Chronicle (SCSU)
Entry Title: Enrollment drops at SCSU; rise at SCTCC
    Entry Credit: Tony Langfellow
Judge Comment: It's easy to forget that a university is also a business, but this story does an excellent job of doing that. The numbers are there, the history is there, and the ramifications are there. Going one step further, the comparison with an across-town school, is also there. Well done!
  • Place Name: Second Place
Contestant Name: ThreeSixty Journalism (University of St. Thomas)
Entry Title: Reclaiming Culture Feeds into a Healthy Life
    Entry Credit: Isabel Saavedra-Weis
Judge Comment: Exellent profile of a business person who is making a difference in the community. While lacking a bit in attribution, it is understood where the sentiment is coming from. Excellent profile and message about a cultural community.
  • Place Name: Third Place
Contestant Name: The Bark (University of Minnesota - Duluth)
Entry Title: DULUTH CIDER WILL BECOME THE FIRST CIDERY EVER IN DULUTH
    Entry Credit: Vincent Harvieux
Judge Comment: Although a bit wordy and far-flung, this is a nice profile of a business started by alums. If anyone asks the question about what to do after school, they can be told: "Start a cidery!" Excellent research and rapport with the subjects. Good job capturing the long road it takes to get to success.
  • Competition Comment: These all covered excellent topics, but not all answered the question in the writing: What does this mean for the reader? Approach all story ideas with that in mind, and they will make for a better read and a more relevant story. Above all, commas are a good thing!
